What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic care is the diagnosis, management and treatment of disorders within the musculoskeletal system (misalignments or fixations of the joints) and their impact on the nervous system. It is a drug-free, surgery-free, non-invasive treatment that is safe for patients from all walks of life, including children and the elderly. Members of the Scottish Chiropractic Association are highly trained and have undergone a minimum of 4-5 years of intensive courses at an approved Chiropractic College. Each chiropractor must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council in order to practice within the UK.
What to expect on the first visit
On the first visit, each patient will fill out a personal details form and answer some questions about the presenting problem. A detailed history will then be taken, including information about past problems and illnesses. This will be followed by a physical examination which will include relevant chiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological tests. Treatment may or may not occur on the first visit, depending on how acute the problem is and whether further tests are necessary. Occasionally, you may be referred for x-rays or other diagnostic tests that will aid in the diagnosis of your condition. Before treatment, a full report of findings will be outlined with your diagnosis and recommended treatment plan.
Phases of Chiropractic Care
There are three phases of chiropractic care: (i) relief care (ii) rehabilitative care (iii) wellness care. Relief care is focussed on eliminating discomfort and decreasing presenting pain. This can occur quite quickly, although in some cases it may take up to a month. Advice will be given at this stage to support pain relief. Rehabilitative care is the second stage, and the focus is on healing and correcting underlying problems that led to the initial complaint. Muscle strengthening and improving neuromusculoskeletal function are key components towards correcting dysfunction. Treatments become less frequent, but this phase takes place over a period of time as your body will need to stabilize and strengthen. Using a functional approach, your chiropractor will give you supportive exercises to maintain your current level. Wellness care is the third stage of chiropractic care, and occurs much like a 'tune-up' to prevent an overall breakdown. Daily stresses can build up over time and at this stage we aim to maintain good overall spinal functioning and health. It is always up to you what phase of chiropractic care you choose as well as how long you continue with your chiropractic treatment.
